BTS are the seven-member group that turned K-pop from a regional phenomenon into a permanent fixture of global pop. They debuted in 2013 under a small company, Big Hit Entertainment, with a hip-hop sound and lyrics about school pressure and ambition. Within seven years they had a Billboard Hot 100 number one, a Grammy nomination and the largest fandom on the internet.

What makes BTS different from most idol groups is authorship. The members, especially RM, SUGA and j-hope, have written and produced their own music since the beginning, and the discography reads like a diary: youth and anxiety in the early years, self-love and mental health in the Love Yourself era, joy as a survival strategy in the pandemic singles. Fans follow the story as much as the songs.

The group paused full-group activities from 2022 while the members completed South Korea's mandatory military service and released solo projects. They returned as a full group in 2026 with the album ARIRANG, led by the title track SWIM. If you are starting now, you are starting at the beginning of a new chapter.

Start here: five songs

  1. 1

    Dynamite (2020)

The all-English disco-pop single that gave BTS their first Billboard Hot 100 number one. If you only know one BTS song, it is probably this one, and it is the easiest door into the catalog.

  2. 2

    Spring Day (2017)

The song ARMY will tell you is the group's masterpiece: a ballad about missing someone, wrapped in a music video full of quiet symbolism. It has never really left the Korean charts.

  3. 3

    Blood Sweat & Tears (2016)

The moment BTS became an art-house act. Baroque visuals, a Hermann Hesse reference and choreography that set the standard for the next decade of boy groups.

  4. 4

    I NEED U (2015)

Their first music-show win and the start of The Most Beautiful Moment in Life storyline, the fictional universe that fans still decode frame by frame.

  5. 5

    SWIM (2026)

The title track of ARIRANG and the sound of the reunited group. Start here if you want to follow BTS in real time rather than catch up on history.

Timeline

  1. 2013

Debut with 2 Cool 4 Skool

No More Dream introduces a seven-member hip-hop group from a company too small to get them on variety shows. They build an audience online instead, a habit that later becomes their superpower.

  2. 2015

The Most Beautiful Moment in Life

I NEED U earns the group's first music-show win and RUN follows. The HYYH albums shift the sound toward emotional pop and launch the fictional universe that runs through their videos.

  3. 2016–2017

Wings and the first world tour

Blood Sweat & Tears and Spring Day make BTS the biggest group in Korea. DNA gets its first Hot 100 entry and the group performs at the American Music Awards, the first K-pop act to do so.

  4. 2018

    Love Yourself and the UN

Love Yourself: Tear becomes the first K-pop album to top the Billboard 200. RM addresses the United Nations General Assembly with the Love Myself campaign speech.

  5. 2019–2020

    Stadiums and Dynamite

The Speak Yourself tour plays Wembley Stadium and the Rose Bowl. When the pandemic cancels touring, Dynamite arrives in August 2020 and becomes their first Hot 100 number one.

  6. 2021–2022

    Butter, Grammys, Proof

Butter spends ten weeks at number one on the Hot 100 and earns a Grammy nomination. In 2022 the anthology album Proof and the Yet To Come concert in Busan close the chapter before military service.

  7. 2023–2025

    Solo chapter and service

Each member releases solo work, from Jung Kook's Seven to Jimin's Like Crazy, while completing mandatory military service one by one.

  8. 2026

    ARIRANG

The full group returns with ARIRANG, a fourteen-track album led by SWIM, with music videos for Hooligan, 2.0 and NORMAL, and an awards-season run that includes the American Music Awards.

Moments fans remember

The rookies who answered fans one by one

Before BTS could get on television, they posted daily logs, dance practices and replies to fans on their own channels. ARMY started as a few thousand people who felt personally seen, and that intimacy scaled to millions without ever quite disappearing.

Speak Yourself at Wembley

In June 2019 BTS sold out Wembley Stadium in London, a first for a Korean act. When 60,000 people sang the Korean lyrics of Young Forever back to the group, several of the members cried on stage. Fans point to that night as the moment the world stopped asking whether K-pop could travel.

Dynamite and the summer of 2020

The group wrote Dynamite as a gift to fans stuck at home during the pandemic. It went to number one in its first week, and the pastel diner and record-shop visuals became the definitive image of BTS for people who had never heard them before.

Yet To Come in Busan

The free concert in October 2022, in support of Busan's World Expo bid, was the last full-group show before enlistment. The setlist was a career retrospective, and ARMY treated it as a promise: the best moment is yet to come.
