IU (Lee Ji-eun)

IU is the most successful solo artist in modern K-pop and one of the few who writes her own songs. She debuted in September 2008 at fifteen with the ballad Lost Child, spent two years as a respected but modest performer, and then released Good Day in December 2010. The song's famous three-step high note turned her into a national star overnight, and she has stayed at the top of the Korean charts for fifteen years.

Her catalog moves between bright pop (Good Day, You & I, BBIBBI), quiet singer-songwriter records (Palette, Love poem, LILAC) and collaborations with rappers and idols, including eight with SUGA of BTS and Palette with G-Dragon. Fans call her 'the nation's little sister' and, later, 'the nation's singer', and every year the year-end Korean charts have at least one IU song near the top.

IU is also an acclaimed actress under her birth name Lee Ji-eun, with lead roles in My Mister, Hotel Del Luna and the 2025 series When Life Gives You Tangerines. For a new listener the entry point is easy: start with the hits, then follow the albums she wrote herself.

Start here: five songs

  1. 1

    Good Day (2010)

The three-step high note that made IU a household name. Still the song most Koreans would name first.

  2. 2

    Blueming (2019)

The lead single from Love poem, a bright, guitar-driven pop track that sat at the top of the charts for weeks and is a favorite of younger fans.

  3. 3

    eight (2020)

Produced by and featuring SUGA of BTS, a song about being twenty-eight and losing people. It went straight to number one on release.

  4. 4

    Palette (2017)

The self-portrait single from her fourth album, with G-Dragon. IU at twenty-five, taking stock. The album is the one fans recommend to prove she is a songwriter first.

  5. 5

    Celebrity (2021)

An upbeat single about a friend who feels like an outsider, and one of her biggest streaming hits. A good bridge into the LILAC album.

Timeline

  1. 2008

    Lost Child

Debut at fifteen with a ballad that gets little attention. IU spends the next two years building a reputation on live vocals.

  2. 2010

    Good Day

The three-step high note makes IU a superstar. Good Day tops every Korean chart and stays there into the new year.

  3. 2011–2013

You & I and Modern Times

Last Fantasy, led by You & I, sweeps the Korean charts; Modern Times shifts toward jazz and swing and shows the range that defines her later work.

  4. 2015–2017

    CHAT-SHIRE and Palette

IU writes most of CHAT-SHIRE (Twenty-three) herself. Palette, released in 2017, becomes her defining singer-songwriter album with Through the Night and Palette featuring G-Dragon.

  5. 2018–2019

    BBIBBI and Love poem

BBIBBI tops the charts, and IU's turn in the drama My Mister earns critical acclaim. Blueming leads the Love poem EP in 2019 alongside Hotel Del Luna.

  6. 2020–2021

    eight, LILAC and Celebrity

eight with SUGA of BTS debuts at number one. LILAC, her fifth album, closes what she called her twenties chapter with Celebrity and strawberry moon.

  7. 2024–2025

The Winning and the world tour

Love wins all and Shopper lead The Winning; the HEREH world tour plays arenas across Asia, Europe and the Americas, and When Life Gives You Tangerines becomes a global hit in 2025.

Moments fans remember

The three-step high note

In late 2010 a teenager in a school uniform sang the climax of Good Day live, climbing three notes in a row, and Korea collectively lost its mind. UAENAs still count every live performance of the note like a sports statistic.

Writing her own twenties

From CHAT-SHIRE at twenty-three to LILAC at twenty-eight, IU wrote a record of each stage of her twenties. Fans read the albums in order as a single story, which is rare for a pop star and part of why the fandom is so loyal.

Singer and actress, equally

IU is one of the few K-pop artists whose acting career is as respected as her music. Her role in My Mister, and later When Life Gives You Tangerines, brought in fans who had never heard Good Day, and the two audiences meet at her concerts.
