NewJeans debuted in July 2022 without a teaser, a countdown or an announcement. The music video for Attention simply appeared, followed by Hype Boy, Cookie and Hurt over the next few days, and by the end of the week the five members were the most talked-about rookies in Korea. It was the opposite of how K-pop launches usually work, and it became the template everyone copied.

The sound was different too. Produced under ADOR with creative director Min Hee-jin, NewJeans leaned into early-2000s R&B, UK garage and Jersey club, sung softly and shot like a home video. Ditto and OMG, released around New Year 2023, turned that aesthetic into a nationwide mood, and Super Shy and ETA carried it through the summer.

The group's rise was interrupted in late 2024 by a public legal dispute between the members and their agency, which paused activities. Whatever comes next, the 2022 to 2024 run remains one of the most influential stretches any K-pop group has had, and the songs are the best place to start.

Start here: five songs

  1. 1

    Hype Boy (2022)

The song that made NewJeans a phenomenon, with four member-specific versions of the video and a chorus that took over every Korean playlist.

  2. 2

    Ditto (2022)

A wintry Baltimore-club track and a short film about a fictional girls' school. It spent months at the top of the Korean charts and is the fandom's most beloved song.

  3. 3

    Super Shy (2023)

The bright, fast-talking summer single that became a global hit and introduced the group to a lot of Western listeners.

  4. 4

    OMG (2023)

Ditto's companion single, with a hospital-set music video that fans still debate. The sweeter, catchier half of the pair.

  5. 5

    Attention (2022)

The debut. Watch it first if you want to understand why the surprise release worked: five teenagers dancing in a gym, no concept, all charm.

Timeline

  1. 2022

    The surprise debut

Attention, Hype Boy, Cookie and Hurt arrive in one week in July with no pre-release promotion. Ditto and OMG close the year and dominate the winter charts.

  2. 2023

    Get Up

Super Shy, ETA and New Jeans lead the Get Up EP, which debuts at number one on the Billboard 200. The group performs at Lollapalooza in Chicago and headlines a special stage at the Korean awards season.

  3. 2024

How Sweet, Supernatural and Tokyo Dome

How Sweet and Bubble Gum arrive in spring; Supernatural and Right Now mark the Japanese debut. The group fills Tokyo Dome for a fan meeting.

  4. 2024–2025

    The dispute

A public conflict between the members and ADOR over management leads to a legal dispute and a pause in group activities while the courts decide the contract's status.

Moments fans remember

No teaser, no countdown

K-pop debuts are usually weeks of trailers. NewJeans dropped Attention on a Friday with no warning, and Bunnies still talk about refreshing the channel in disbelief as Hype Boy, Cookie and Hurt appeared over the following days.

The Ditto winter

Ditto was released in December 2022 with a pair of grainy short films set in the 1990s. It felt like a memory instead of a comeback, and it sat at number one in Korea for most of the winter while fans argued about the story's ending.

Five teenagers, one Billboard number one

Get Up debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in 2023, when the members were between fifteen and nineteen years old. Bunnies point to that summer, with Super Shy playing everywhere from Seoul to Lollapalooza, as the peak of the NewJeans moment.
