About this world cup
A debut song is the only song an artist gets to release without a reputation. This world cup collects 64 first singles, from Girls' Generation's Into the New World and BTS's No More Dream to ILLIT's Magnetic and KATSEYE's Debut, and asks which one announced its group best.
The field spans every generation. From the second generation: TVXQ!'s Hug, Super Junior's TWINS, BIGBANG's LA LA LA, Wonder Girls' Irony, KARA's Break It, 2NE1's FIRE and SHINee's Replay. From the third: EXO's MAMA, SEVENTEEN's Adore U, TWICE's Like OOH-AHH, Red Velvet's Happiness, BLACKPINK's WHISTLE, GOT7's Girls Girls Girls and NCT U's The 7th Sense. From the fourth and beyond: Stray Kids' District 9, ATEEZ's Pirate King, TXT's CROWN, ITZY's DALLA DALLA, aespa's Black Mamba, IVE's ELEVEN, NewJeans' Attention, LE SSERAFIM's FEARLESS, RIIZE's Get A Guitar and BABYMONSTER's BATTER UP.
Some of these songs are stone-cold classics and some are charming rookie efforts by groups who got much bigger later, which makes the early rounds unpredictable. Play the full Round of 64 for the complete history lesson.
Matchups to watch
Into the New World vs No More Dream
Two debuts that became anthems far beyond their fandoms. A song about hope against a song about refusing to settle.
Like OOH-AHH vs Black Mamba
TWICE's cheerful first step against aespa's metaverse launch. Five years apart, completely different ideas of a girl group debut.
Replay vs District 9
SHINee's polished 2008 introduction against Stray Kids' self-produced 2018 arrival. Both groups sounded fully formed from day one.
